Indian family history collection, 1855-1872.

Record book containing the names of all the Chippewa of Saginaw, Swan Creek and Black River bands and others who settled on the government reservation at Mount Pleasant (Mich.) up until 1868. Entries are arranged alphabetically by the head of household, and include names and ages of spouse and children. Occasionally, it includes other information such as death date or when people moved off the reservation. Original was written and compiled by Philip Gruett, the information was then transcribed into this volume by William S. Smith, another Native American. An index to all names in the volume was created by Frank Dobbs, local lawyer. Collection includes several enclosures: a Gruett genealogy, biographical sketch of William Smith, and a history of the volume. Also includes Land Lists, 1855 and 1872.
